Windows File Explorer may not show a useful picture for an SVG file on its own. Microsoft PowerToys can add SVG thumbnails and a larger Preview pane so you can recognize a design before opening it in another program.
1. Install Microsoft PowerToys
Use Microsoft’s official installation instructions or the Microsoft Store. PowerToys is a free, open-source collection of Windows utilities.
2. Turn on SVG previews
- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select File Explorer add-ons.
- Turn on the SVG Preview pane handler.
- Turn on SVG thumbnail previews.
3. Enable the Preview pane in File Explorer
Open File Explorer and choose View → Show → Preview pane. Selecting an SVG should now show a larger preview on the right. A restart may be required before thumbnails appear.
Microsoft notes that the Windows Preview pane background cannot always be changed. Try the thumbnail view or open the file against a darker background before assuming it is empty.
What previews do not solve
Thumbnails help you recognize files, but they do not automatically group several formats as one design, explain which bundle a file came from, or keep purchase details attached. If that is the real problem, improve the folder structure before installing more software.
